01 / The essentials

What makes a great prompt?

A prompt is what you type or share with ChatGPT to tell it what you need. You don’t need magic words — just enough direction.

01

State the task

Start with a clear action: explain, summarize, brainstorm, compare, write or plan.

02

Add useful context

Say who it’s for, what you already know and any relevant background or examples.

03

Specify the output

Ask for a checklist, table, steps, email, word limit or a particular tone.

A simple formula to remember

Task + Context + Audience + Format + Constraints

Use the parts that actually matter — not every prompt needs all five.
02 / Real examples

Small changes. Big improvement.

Select a scenario to see how specific instructions make a request more useful.

✕ Too vague

Before

“Help me write an email.”

Too little detail about purpose, reader or tone.

✓ More useful

After

“Write a polite email to my manager requesting two days of annual leave next week. Keep it under 120 words and include a subject line.”

Defines audience, goal, tone and length.

Six habits of better prompting

Simple techniques you can use right away.

1
Say what success looks like

Explain how you will judge a useful answer, not only what topic you want.

2
Show an example

Provide a sample of the style, structure or result you prefer.

3
Set a clear scope

Give a word count, timeframe, reading level or budget if relevant.

4
Refine your first answer

Ask ChatGPT to shorten, clarify, expand or revise what it just produced.

5
Check important facts

Verify factual claims, references, calculations and critical advice independently.

6
Protect private information

Remove passwords, account numbers, personal identifiers and confidential material.

05 / Quick check

1. About this website

Promptwise is an independent educational website that teaches the basics of writing prompts for ChatGPT. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by OpenAI.

2. Information collection and local processing

This standalone website does not require accounts, collect names or email addresses, use analytics, set tracking cookies or transmit prompts to a website server. The interactive prompt builder operates entirely in your browser; its text fields are not uploaded, stored in browser storage or retained by this page after you close or reload it.

3. External links and ChatGPT

If you visit an external website, including ChatGPT or OpenAI documentation, that provider's own privacy policy and terms apply. Copying a prompt here does not submit it to ChatGPT automatically. If you choose to paste it into ChatGPT, OpenAI processes the information under its own policies and settings.

4. Safe use of AI

Do not enter passwords, sensitive personal data, confidential company information or financial account details into prompts unless you understand the service's data-handling practices and have permission to share the information. AI-generated answers can be inaccurate and should be checked before important decisions.

5. ChatGPT data controls

OpenAI provides options in ChatGPT Settings → Data controls, including a setting for whether new conversations may be used to improve its models. Temporary Chat has different history, memory and retention behavior. Consult the current official ChatGPT data controls guide for details and changes.

6. Educational use and disclaimer

Content is provided for general educational purposes “as is,” without a guarantee of accuracy, uninterrupted availability or particular outcomes. It does not constitute legal, medical, financial or other professional advice. Users are responsible for reviewing outputs and how they use them.

ChatGPT and OpenAI are trademarks of their respective owner. Example prompts and original learning text on this page are provided for personal educational use. No ownership of third-party trademarks is claimed.

8. Changes and contact

If the website is modified, deployed with analytics, contact forms, advertising, hosting logs or other data collection, this policy should be updated before publication. This template does not yet specify a site owner or privacy contact; the publisher should add its real identity and contact information before publicly launching a hosted site.
